V is for “visibility” and more
Why does ChristianWeek continue to publish a family of newspapers that reach communities in various parts of Canada? Why is Christian media worthy of time and attention? How does this project benefit the people of God in Canada? So glad you asked: Let me briefly outline a few wonderful reasons.
Let's begin with the idea that Jesus commissioned his followers have a mandate for visibility. I draw this most explicitly from the Sermon on the Mount.
“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:14-16).
Christians are called to engage our culture, but that won't happen if we hide ourselves from the world around us. It's not good to tuck ourselves away behind stained glass. We have much to do in the world at large, and hearing about others who are active and effective is encouraging. We have much to be visible about. Publish good news.
It can also very helpful for communities to have a forum for Christian voices. Notice, please, the plural. Rarely is there ever a singular Christian voice, but biblically compatible perspectives abound. We benefit from the wisdom of multiple voices. The Christian family is like a large choir - frequently harmonious and sometimes downright dissonant. We need a place to gather and practice our craft, a place to hear other voices and adjust the tenor of our own.
The broader Christian community also benefits when it has a reliable vehicle for vital information. If Christians want to be visible and are raising their voices, it's important that the things they say be based on accurate information. A newspaper is a good place to tell stories based on facts and share perspectives founded on sound knowledge and expertise.
ChristianWeek is a trustworthy vehicle helping Christian communities move in the right direction. It's a place for us to be visible, vocal and credible, a good place for us to demonstrate our vitality. Help us stay on the road by making a donation today.
