MP wins election, loses wife

WATERLOO, ON - Conservative MP Harold Albrecht won his third election only to lose his wife.

Albrecht, who first won the Kitchener-Conestoga riding in 2006, watched the Conservative Party of Canada win a 166-seat majority from his home on Monday, May 2. Albrecht and Betty, his wife of 39 years, were getting ready to leave and attend the victory party when she collapsed.

Betty was immediately rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to Hamilton General Hospital. She died Wednesday, May 4 as a result of a spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage.

"It's a devastating thing," says Dave MacDonald, station manager at Faith FM in Kitchener and a Conservative candidate in the fall provincial election. "I was completely blown away by the news.
"Our heart goes out to him and his family - 59 years old is way too young."

MacDonald knew the Albrechts since Harold's time as pastor at Pathway Community Church.

"They were devoted to each other," says MacDonald of the mother of three and grandmother of nine. "She was at his side all the time. It's a huge loss for Harold and his family."

MacDonald yet had contact with Albrecht. A release by Albrecht's office says the family appreciates the prayers and good wishes but asked for "some quiet time to heal in privacy."

The funeral was held May 8 at Christian Reformed Church in Kitchener.
