World Vision Canada sets Guinness record
TORONTO, ON - Armed with buckets, bottles and mason jars, close to 300 World Vision Canada supporters came together on Toronto's waterfront to break the Guinness World Record for most people carrying water jugs on their heads.
The event was held May 7 at Woodbine Beach Park, and coincided with an ambitious Toronto-based campaign aimed to find sponsors for 5,000 children in eight weeks. Volunteers had to walk 100 metres while carrying one-and-a-half cups of water on their heads.
Friends of World Vision, a group of committed volunteers, organized the event.
"It's the first time in World Vision Canada's history that volunteers are spearheading such a major initiative," says Jane Bargout, marketing communications manager.
Guinness World Record adjudicator, Danny Girton Jr. flew in from New York for the event.
"We wanted to create awareness of the fact that every day hundreds of women and children have to walk many miles to get access to clean water," says Catherine Davey, volunteer coordinator for Friends of World Vision.
"It was a lot of fun, but we don't want it to stop there. We want people to talk about it, engage in discussion and get involved in child sponsorship."
