Vision Ministries Canada mourns colleague’s tragic death
CAMBRIDGE, ON—David McClurkin, a Cambridge pastor and part-time staff member with Vision Ministries Canada (VMC), died tragically on December 30, 2011.
In a letter to those on the VMC e-mail list, founder Gord Martin tells how McClurkin slipped on some ice and hit his head during a walk with his wife, Gladys, on December 28. McClurkin seemed fine and continued the walk. But by 4:30 p.m. he was unable to speak clearly and was rushed to the hospital where a CT scan showed a massive brain hemorrhage.
"Dave has been such a supportive brother to me at VMC for the last 10 years. It's hard to imagine life without him," writes Martin. VMC, based in Waterloo, helps start new churches, helps existing churches succeed more and helps to open ministry doors for younger leaders.
McClurkin trained and worked as a chartered accountant until he became a teaching pastor at churches in Elmira, Kitchener and, until his untimely passing, the Cambridge Community Church. He worked part-time for VMC in policy development, preaching, financial supervision and work consulting with and encouraging church leaders.
"Dave loved the Lord, loved His Word, loved to teach it and loved to discuss anything and everything related to his God who loves prodigals," Martin adds.
McClurkin leaves behind Gladys, his wife of 49 years, and his children David of Greece, Daniel of Kitchener and Debra Shepherd (nee McClurkin) and husband Geoff of Australia. A service of thanksgiving was held at Waterloo's Creekside Church on January 4.
