Discipleship training program helps students get grounded, grow and go
SASKATOON, SK—Preparing young adults for Christian life and ministry—that's the goal of faculty and staff at Horizon College and Seminary, and one of the ways they accomplish that goal is by offering a discipleship training program in conjunction with Youth With a Mission (YWAM).
The eight-month program, called G3, was started five years ago. Students spend the first half of the program in Saskatoon where they participate in YWAM training sessions, Horizon Bible courses and serve with various ministries in the city. For the second half of G3, students travel to Nepal or Pakistan to serve with fellow Christians.
The three Gs the program is named after come from its three aims: Ground students in God's word, help them to grow spiritually, and then send them to go out and serve.
"In all of our programs, we want our students to grow closer to God," says Ashley Drayton, Horizon's recruitment and promotions officer. "This is another venue where people can be practically out there serving."
Students who complete the program receive a certificate. If they want to continue on to pastoral ministry, the program can be counted as the first year of their B.A.
Some of the classes students take during during G3 are also transferable to the University of Saskatchewan.
Drayton adds that one interesting aspect of the program is that while serving in inner city Saskatoon, students are exposed to newcomers to Canada that represent more than 25 different nationalities.
