Manafest bringing “Fighter” to Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB—A Canadian Christian hip-hop artist is bringing his message of perseverance to Winnipeg.

Chris Greenwood, a.k.a. Manafest, will perform at the West End Cultural Centre on Saturday, June 16 in support of his latest album, Fighter.

"These songs talk about all the different struggles we all face as people—internal struggles," Greenwood says by phone from a tour stop in Fort McMurray, Alberta. "The whole concept [of] Fighter isn't about a physical fight as much as it's about the internal thoughts and fears and insecurities we sometimes deal with in relationships."

The 32-year-old knows all about overcoming obstacles. When Greenwood was five, his father committed suicide. After a childhood filled with insecurity, he planned to become a professional skateboarder. An injury left him unable to see that plan through, so he decided to focus on music.

Over the past nine years, Greenwood's albums have sold a combined total of 150,000 copies, and his music has been featured in TV shows like CSI: Miami and One Tree Hill. He has been nominated for two Junos and has toured through the United States, England, Ireland and New Zealand.

He recently toured through Japan for the fourth time and performed in China for the first time.

"People were singing [my] songs all the way in China, and I was not expecting that," Greenwood says. "You don't realize how powerful the Internet is and [how] things can spread. It's amazing."

Tickets for Manafest's show at the West End Cultural Centre are $15 at Ticketmaster. Toronto rock band Whosarmy will also perform. Visit www.manafest.ca.
