Late-night inspiration launches jazzy new album

WINNIPEG, MB—Just like the biblical character Samuel, God called local singer-songwriter Monika Wall in the night, and that's what led her to record her debut album.

"I had a song in my head," says Wall, who released her album Parallel Mondo in September. "I couldn't sleep, and I could tell if I didn't record it, I wouldn't be able to sleep."

After recording the song in her house in the middle of the night, Wall says another song came, and then another one. Over the course of five years, she wrote roughly 75 songs, 12 of which appear on Parallel Mondo.

Wall has a master's degree in music and vocal performance from the University of Indiana, and she lived and sang in Europe for five years. She describes her sound as "vintage cabaret and chamber pop." It's a jazzy sound heavily influenced by the sounds of Hollywood films from the 1940s, '50s and '60s.

"I really don't even feel like they're my songs, but that God has given them to me and given them into my care," says Wall, who attends Douglas Mennonite Church with her husband, Alex, and their two sons. "It's been put on me to find opportunities to share these songs. That's my motivation for getting them out there."
