Christian comedian finds mainstream success with debut album
TORONTO, ON—An acclaimed comedian known for his Christian beliefs and clean comedy act has released his debut album.
Matt Falk released Apple Pie & Scars digitally in November and on CD in December. Falk, who is originally from Niverville, Manitoba, recorded the album while headlining at Rumor's Comedy Club in Winnipeg in July 2012.
The album reached number one on the iTunes comedy chart on its first day of release.
"That was very exciting," says the 23-year-old, who currently lives in the Greater Toronto Area with his wife, Sabrina. "It was a whirlwind—to have a project you put so much love and effort into, and to not just have it released, but have it be so well received as well."
The material on the album was written over the course of five years and includes bits about weight loss, being married and growing up Mennonite.
In addition to performing stand up, Falk makes his living writing for, and performing on, RocKids TV, a Bible-based television series for children ages four to 10.
In 2008, Falk became the youngest comic in history to headline Rumor's Comedy Club, and in 2010 he placed second at the World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has worked with renowned comedians like Ron James, Brent Butt and Gilbert Gottfried.
Falk says that in 2013, his plan is to keep doing what he's doing and also release a live DVD of his stand up act.
"I'm hoping to build off what I did in 2012 and go the next step," he says.
