Internship brings social justice up close and personal

WINNIPEG, MB—A new internship offered by Youth With a Mission (YWAM) will teach participants about peace and social justice issues in a downtown context.

YWAM Urban Ministries Winnipeg is offering the Peace and Justice Internship from March 4 to May 24. Jamie and Kim Arpin-Ricci are co-directors of the urban ministries team, as well as co-directors of the internship. Participants will live in intentional Christian community and work alongside long-term ministry in Winnipeg's multicultural West End neighbourhood.

Jamie Arpin-Ricci says he hopes the six interns who are chosen will leave the internship "with a strong conceptual and experiential understanding of how peace and justice fit at the heart of the Christian life."

"We hope to provide them with a new way to see and engage the world around them regardless of where their next steps take them, making peace and justice central to their life and faith," he says.

Celebrated author, speaker and new monastic leader Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove will be one of the guest speakers during the internship.

"We are excited for him to bring a level of tangible understanding to the content of the program," Arpin-Ricci says. "His commitment to living out the biblical values of peace and justice is matched only by the depth of understanding he brings to that process. His experience with peace and justice includes both local expressions in his home and community, as well as in the international arena. His many books demonstrate both his commitment and his qualifications."

Arpin-Ricci adds that topics like justice and peace are somewhat trendy among Christians these days, especially Christian young people. While their intentions are good, often that interest lacks a solid foundation with little to no understanding of what peace and justice mean in the context of the Christian faith.

"As a result, those well intentioned efforts can often cause more harm than good," he says. "That is why we wanted to offer this internship—to provide a first step to laying that foundation and invite Christians into the important vocation to live out peace and justice that is at the heart of God's Kingdom."
