Awards celebrate best in Canadian Christian writing
MISSISSAUGA, ON—Writers from across the country gathered in mid-June for the 24th annual Canadian Christian Writing Awards.
Deb Elkink of Medicine Hat, Alberta was astonished and delighted to receive the prestigious Grace Irwin Award for her debut novel, The Third Grace.
"To begin with, I was delighted to learn that The Third Grace was shortlisted in the contemporary novel category," Elkink says. "But I was truly astonished at the gala when it was named the overall book of the year."
The $5,000 award—donated by John W. and Eleanor Irwin—is Canada's largest literary award for writers who are Christian.
The annual writing awards are sponsored by The Word Guild, and celebrate the best in Canadian fiction, non-fiction, poetry and journalism by authors writing from a Christian worldview. This year there were 360 entries entered in 35 categories.
ChristianWeek's William Leighton presented the award for best Christian Living book to Greg Paul of Sanctuary, for Close Enough to Hear God Breathe. "Out of Africa" columnist Thomas Froese was awarded for best column, as well as winning two awards of merit.
The night culminated with the presentation of the Leslie K. Tarr Award for Lifetime Achievement to Jean Vanier, author of nearly 30 books, and the founder of L'Arche communities.
