Bikers ride to raise funds for local food bank
MONTREAL, QC—On Rock Community Services recently held their first ever Ride Against Hunger fundraiser, collecting more than $7,500 for its food bank's ongoing work.
More than 30 motorcycle riders took part in the ride, which covered a 240-kilometre route from western Quebec to eastern Ontario.
"The need for food banks seems to be on the rise, especially in our community," says Kim Reid, president of On Rock Community Services.
The organization serves a low income pocket of the West Island, Montreal. Reid says more than 2,000 children live within a six block radius of On Rock. The average annual household income is about $12,000.
On Rock provides food boxes to up to 180 families a week. They also hold a weekly community dinner every Tuesday.
"The numbers just keep increasing," Reid says. "Every week we're getting a call from another five or six people telling us they need help."
He says he's heard of families having as little as 10 dollars left after they've paid the rent.
"We're there to help relieve the stress," he says. "The only thing stopping us from meeting their needs is getting enough resources."
