Built for Battle equips four thousand men
MISSISSAUGA, ON—As hundreds of men moved to the stage at the Hershey Centre for prayer, thousands of others cheered them on.
The moment, which Promise Keepers Canada president Kirk Giles will "always remember," took place on the Friday night of this year's conference in Mississauga. The November 18 and 19 event was attended by 4,100 men with staff and volunteers pushing the total involved up to 4,300.
Several prominent speakers discussed the weekend's theme, "Built for Battle."
Waterloo's Creekside Church lead pastor Ken Taylor told the men, "Get worship right, get everything right; get worship wrong, get everything wrong."
Dwayne Cline, pastor of Hamilton's Hughson Street Baptist Church suggested it was "time we stopped being the audience of God."
And Steve Farrar, founder and chairman of Men's Leadership Ministries spoke of Christianity as a "thinking man's battle" in which endurance is gained through suffering.
The session on the "Ultimate Fight Weapon" now holds a special memory for Giles. Led by Rick Verkerk, PK Canada's national manager of Events and Field Ministry, the session focused on prayer for pastors, the nation and young men.
Verkerk called four young men to the stage, which included Giles' two oldest sons who were at the conference.
"I wasn't expecting it. I had the chance to be able to pray over not only my own boys but all the young men in the arena," says Giles. "That for me was a huge highlight of the weekend."
