Canada’s bishops want Catholic Church to issue new statement on Doctrine of Discovery

Pope Francis made history this week during his visit to Canada as he denounced "the sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable people" in his apology to Indigenous Canadians.
However, many Indigenous people and institutions are criticizing the Pope for what was missing in his apology - most notably, any mention of the "Doctrine of Discovery." Now, a spokesperson for Canada's Catholic bishops says they are working with the Vatican on a statement which would address this important aspect of the church's oppressive history.
