Canadian heads international religion news agency

David Harris, publisher and editor of the Canadian magazine The Presbyterian Record is the new president of Ecumenical News International.

The international news organization, which uses a network of freelance journalists around the world, was forced to suspend its daily news service last December, after a 50 per cent funding cut from the World Council of Churches.

The Geneva-based agency also draws support from Lutheran World Federation, the World Communion of Reformed Churches and the Conference of European Churches, which have also experienced their own financial challenges.

“ENI has both tremendous challenges and tremendous opportunities," Harris says. “We face funding challenges because the donor organizations are facing funding challenges. On the positive side, however, those organizations told us they believe in ENI news."

Harris will remain in Canada, and is also continuing with his role at The Presbyterian Record.

“Necessity being the mother of invention, these challenges are forcing us to rethink how ENI operates from the ground up - and that's an exciting and creative process," he adds.
