Charities urge more tax benefits for donors

ELMIRA, ON—A press release from the Canadian Council of Christian Charities (CCCC) is the latest salvo in a bid to encourage more donations to charities in Canada.

The CCCC has endorsed a proposal that would see the federal government raise the charitable tax credit from 29 per cent to 42 per cent. And CCCC executive director John Pellowe is encouraging people to contact their MPs immediately to voice support for the measure.

"Even though Parliament is currently not in session, there will be a caucus meeting taking place and proposals for the budget will be on the agenda," he says. "It is very important that the government hear from its own MPs that there is wide-spread support from the charitable sector for the 29to42 proposal.

The caucus meeting takes place Thursday, January 21, so CCCC asks that you contact your MP by Wednesday morning to indicate your support.

"Not only will the higher tax credit encourage those who have never given before to give now, it also benefits current donors who have proven to be Canada's most charitable givers by allowing them to give even more to charity," says Pellowe.
