Children develop passion for service through The Great KidMission

WINKLER, MB—An organization dedicated to sending children in the developing world to Bible camp is enlisting the help of Canadian children to raise funds for its ministry.

The Great KidMission is an initiative of Children's Camps International (CCI), an evangelical, non-denominational organization that works in India, Southeast Asia and Latin America. It aims to inspire children to raise money for CCI by doing things like chores around the house, throwing a "no gift" birthday party where guests bring $5 to send a child to camp instead, or selling unwanted toys or books.

"We want it to be a method of getting kids here [in Canada] involved in missions by giving them something they can accomplish by themselves," says Greg Wood, vice president in charge of creative entertainment at CCI. "The only way we're going to give kids a heart for missions is if we teach them about missions. We need to raise children now to effectively reach their generation for Christ."

Wood says that Sunday school donations have gone down significantly in churches in the last 20 years—to the point where they are not really a line item in the budgets of many churches. The Great KidMission aims to teach children the benefits of giving.

Churches can get involved with The Great KidMission in a variety of different ways. Some Sunday school groups and kids clubs do a Great KidMission campaign for a certain number of weeks each year.

Wood says that $5 pays for a child overseas to go to Bible camp for five days, and provides a year of follow up.

"For $5, you can change a kid forever," he says. "I just think it's so exciting to see kids get excited about that opportunity."
