Next month, Qatar will become the first Arab country to host the FIFA World Cup when the event kicks off November 20th.

While foreigners do have more freedom in the absolutist Islamic country, both natives and visitors to the country have reason to be concerned about religious persecution. According to Open Doors, Qatar ranks in the top 20 countries worldwide for persecution against Christians, a rise since 2021, with experts citing discrimination, harassment and police surveillance as common experiences.
