City of Winnipeg okays Westgate redevelopment plan

WINNIPEG, MB—Westgate Mennonite Collegiate's redevelopment proposal received approval from the City of Winnipeg Board of Adjustment at the end of March.

In an e-mail sent to Westgate alumni, school principal Bob Hummelt said that opposition to the school's plans was "well organized and vigourous." However, he believes the board made the right choice.

"I believe the Board of Adjustment weighted the merits of the redevelopment design carefully to arrive at what I firmly believe was the correct decision for the school and the community," Hummelt said.

The Grade 7 to Grade 12 school is hoping to redevelop its facilities in Armstrong's Point to include an additional 1,500 square feet, a front entrance glass atrium, an underground student fitness room, an elevator and more.

A group of Armstrong's Point residents are opposed to the plan, fearing any increase in square footage would lead to an increase in enrolment, which would result in more traffic in the community.

Hummelt says the school has no plans to increase its enrolment, which is currently 340.

He described the March 28 hearing before the Board of Adjustment as long and gruelling, and added that he valued the support of staff, parents and alumni.

"I am very appreciate of the support the school received via letters to the [Board of Adjustment]," Hummelt said, adding, "I had been offered many prayers leading up to the hearing, and I clearly felt this uplifting air beneath my wings."

Concerned residents may still appeal the board's decision, Hummelt noted. If that is the case, arguments could be heard again in May.
