CMU launches Graduate School of Theology and Ministry
WINNIPEG, MB—Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) has expanded its academic programming to include the new Graduate School of Theology and Ministry.
Launched September 19, the school "renews and formalizes CMU's commitment to inspire and equip students for pastoral ministry and leadership in the Church, to sound research and scholarship and to service of God's mission in our world," according to a news release.
Karl Koop, director of the new school, told ChristianWeek that the majority of the students in the program are thinking about pastoral ministry or some kind of leadership in the Church, while some are hoping to do further scholarship or are preparing for missions work. Others are taking courses simply for their own personal benefit.
"We're trying to keep the door wide open, and our student body is going to reflect all of those interests," says Koop.
Programs of study include a master of arts in Christian ministry, master of arts in theological studies as well as a certificate in Christian studies, with courses in biblical studies, history, theology, ethics, practical theology and ministry.
The graduate school has significant connection with various Inter-Mennonite denominations as a member of the Winnipeg Theological Cooperative, a partner with Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (Elkhart, Indiana) and Steinbach Bible College. The school also serves as a teaching centre of Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary in Canada.
"This is a school of two denominations, but it really draws in the smaller Mennonite conferences in Manitoba," says Koop. "I think that sets it apart from different schools."
He adds that the students in the graduate school come from a variety of faith traditions.
