Conference inspires musicians and artists to live by faith
Levite Summit offers workshops, training, and a time of connecting
KELOWNA, BC—Working in the arts can be difficult to do in isolation. The Levite Summit, a conference for musicians and artists of all skills levels, offers informative workshops for artists to learn, discuss, and worship God. The conference takes place in Kelowna, B.C. from March 14-15.
“It’s about developing our skills and our gifts, but also about living with pure hearts and integrity,” says Jon Buller, founder of Hear the Music Ministries, a partner organization for the Summit.
“’Levite’ is the biblical word for a temple servant,” Buller says. “In the New Testament, we are all called to be servants and tell God’s story. We are chosen to be holy people as God’s instruments to do his work and to tell others.”
Buller explains the word “summit” describes the conference as a meeting place for people to connect with other ‘Levites,’ get away from the everyday and be refreshed and inspired.
The Levite Summit encourages a balance of skill and integrity for artists who work within the church and outside of it.
“Sometimes artistic experience in the church is rather narrow,” says Buller. “The North American, evangelical church way of doing things usually includes a bit of music and maybe some art and drama, but it’s not necessarily a place where all of the arts are explored or appreciated.
Buller adds that some artists become isolated because their contributions are not nurtured or there is just not a place for their work in a typical church community.
“I think it’s important for us to be expressing our artistic gifts outside of the church to help people connect with each other and with their faith,” he says.
This year’s conference features two keynote speakers: Erwin McManus and Carolyn Arends. McManus is a best selling author and founding pastor of Mosaic Church in Los Angeles, the heart of the entertainment industry in North America. Arends is a Dove-Award-winning singer-songwriter and author.
Sessions at the summit focus on five key areas: fine arts, worship teams, instrument workshops, technical teams, and the music business.
“Although it is a Christian Arts Conference, everyone is welcome,” says Buller, “and we have folks from many different denominations and faith backgrounds attending, whether they use their creativity to serve the church or out in their communities.”
