Crime ring stole $1.5M in checks from church mailboxes in 14 states, sheriff’s office says

Churches across the southeastern United States have been identified as victims of a coordinated campaign of cheque theft totalling over a million dollars.
Police say the crime ring specifically targeted rural churches with unsecured mailboxes, where they could steal envelopes with donations, and deposited cheques into bank accounts opened with false identities. Investigations spanned across 14 states and found that some of the crime ring's co-conspirators were employees at the banks where the stolen cheques were deposited.
