Edmonton organization eases adoption process for potential parents

EDMONTON, AB—An Edmonton organization is making it easier for Christian families in their province to adopt children.

Susan St. Martin and Paige Riegel, two stay-at-home moms with adopted children, started Spirit of Adoption Alberta , along with Wendy Robinson, the program director for Christian Adoption Services. The goal of the ministry is to provide financial aid to stable, Christian families wanting to adopt.

"If God's going to call you to adoption, we want to help you out with the process," says St. Martin, who adds that an average adoption costs anywhere from $5,000 to more than $50,000.

"We want to take away that stumbling block. What if those fees could be paid? What if you could have the opportunity to not be financially burdened going into an adoption? That is our heart—to be a recourse, to be a support."

St. Martin and her colleagues hope to spread the word about their organization so that more people will donate. Not all are called to adopt a child, she says, but you can be a part of the adoption process by making a donation and offsetting someone else's adoption costs.

"I believe as Christians we all have a role in the orphan and the widow's life," she says. "Even $20, $30 or $40 a month is a really powerful donation."
