EFC partners with Global Day of Prayer
TORONTO, ON—The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) will partner with Global Day of Prayer (GDOP) this May, says director of national initiatives, David Macfarlane.
Last year, 7,500 people gathered at the Air Canada centre in Toronto while hundreds of millions worldwide joined in prayer.
At the same time, the EFC organized Celebration 2006, described as a catalyst to "spark a spiritual renewal across Canada," encouraging communication across denominational boundaries.
With both events now gaining momentum in Canada, Macfarlane is joining efforts.
"Inspired by the great GDOP vision from Africa, I sought out the Canadian leaders of this movement who were more than happy to collaborate with the EFC's Celebration 2007 (C2007) in cities across our nation for the good of the Kingdom."
"The bottom line of C2007 is to show that God is at work everywhere in Canada through local churches," says Macfarlane.
Seven years ago, a young South African convert named Graham Power unveiled a similar vision: to see his troubled city united in prayer. The following year, 45,000 people met in Cape Town for a day of intense repentance and intercession.
By May 2004, all 56 nations of Africa had cities united in prayer. As the vision expanded, the International Prayer Council of Africa sent out an invitation to the world.
Christians from 156 of the world's 220 nations gathered on Pentecost Sunday, 2005 to join hands and voices in Power's vision. The goal: to fulfill Habakkuk 2:14 by the year 2010—"the earth … filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea."
Macfarlane, a former businessman like Power, felt a tug from God to leave his career with the American Express Corporation and pursue full-time ministry.
"From the start, it was a God-ordained 'fit.' As we encourage churches and city networks to join the GDOP in the 'upper room'on Pentecost Sunday, we'll then 'go out into the streets in the power of the Holy Spirit' to show God's love in word and deed to our neighbours as part of C2007."
This year's Global Day of Prayer will be held across Canada on May 27.
The EFC encourages participants to report back with stories, photos or video clips that will be featured on the event website (celebration2007.ca).
