Evangelicals call for cancellation of museum sex exhibit
OTTAWA, ON—Evangelical groups in Ottawa have raised concerns about an award-winning exhibit about human sexuality currently touring Canadian museums.
"Sex: A Tell-All Exhibition" is showing at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa until January 2013. The Montreal Science Centre created the exhibit to compliment sex education, and recently had a successful stint at the Saskatchewan Science Centre in Regina.
Both the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) and Institute of Marriage and Family Canada have called the exhibit pornographic and raised concerns that it promotes immoral and unhealthy sexual practices.
Don Hutchinson of EFC blogged, "Parents, be warned that the current plan is school trips to the Museum of Science and Technology … will feature large groups of young children, accompanied by one or two adults, learning more about the mechanics of sex and watching 'soft porn' videos than anything that has to do with science."
Hutchinson also contacted the RCMP to ask that a member of the child protection unit view the exhibit to determine whether it might be in breach of the legal system.
In an open letter IMFC director Dave Quist called for the exhibit to be cancelled saying, "This exhibit includes what can only be described as soft pornography, expressly designed for youth in the context of a museum."
The Canadian Association for Science Centres awarded the exhibit top honours in 2011. It includes videos of couples kissing, photographs of sexual organs, and information on contraception, sexual orientation, masturbation, hormonal changes, handling unwanted sexual advances and emotional readiness for sexual activity. While the exhibit has been designed for those as young as 12, the Ottawa museum recently raised the age of admission to 16.
