Firm foundations help ministries flourish

ChristianWeek is grateful. Earlier this year we were one of more than 130 Christian charitable organizations who applied for grants to a unique consortium of eight foundations and philanthropists who pooled their resources to help Christian-inspired charities "weather current economic challenges and emerge stronger in years to come."

Our request focused on a critical challenge facing publishers: How to navigate the digital media revolution. For nearly 25 years ChristianWeek has been producing newspapers. During this time our business model—and the habits of readers—have changed tremendously.

And while we have not neglected the digital media front (we launched our website in 1996), we are lagging in our ability to deliver news and comment in a timely manner in the variety of digital formats that more and more readers are using.

We believe this needs to change, and developed a proposal that would see ChristianWeek get more serious about our activity in the digital realm.

We want to be better able to deliver stories and resource materials in a greater variety of digital formats. We need to be more available in those places where significant numbers of readers are migrating. We need to tap into new ways to leverage our national reputation for vigorous religious journalism and our bedrock commitment to historic Christianity.

To make a long story short, our proposal was well received and we were one of 43 organizations to be granted infrastructure development dollars totaling $1,034,800 from the partners in Stronger Together 2010. The funders who cooperated in the venture are: the Bridgeway Foundation, the Caritate Foundation, the Catalyst Foundation, the Charis Foundation, J&R Horwood, the Legacy Foundation of Canada (Family Hope Fund), Legacy Foundation of Canada (Legacy Trust) and the Maranatha Foundation.

A complete list of the successful ministries and more information about the wide variety of projects is posted online at www.strongertogether2010.ca.

We are very grateful to each of these agencies and individuals who are honouring the legacy of ChristianWeek and strengthening our platform for the future by investing in us. Expanding our digital horizons and using our print capacity on a more cost-effective basis will have a long term impact on ChristianWeek's ability to be a vital forum for Christian voices and a responsible voice for Christian perspectives in Canada.
