Gathering evidence for God
In past few years, quite a number of Christian books have appeared with the same theme as this newest volume: groups of apologists rally together to defend the faith. They are doing so, because it would seem that at no other time in Christian history has our faith come under such strong attack by outside forces which seem determined to silence Christians and discredit Christian writers, thinkers and professors.
Dembski and Licona believe the strongest attacks are coming from American faculty in universities who are “overwhelmingly asserting their desire to see Christian influence lessened on university campuses, in politics and in public venues." According to a 2007 study cited by the editors of this book, “American [university] faculty 'feel less positively about Evangelicals than about any other religious group.'"
But instead of simply wringing their hands over the situation, the editors and contributors to Evidence For God see an opportunity to defend and share the faith precisely where the greatest debate and strongest antagonism exists. This book contains 50 excellent little essays that touch on science, philosophy, history and theology, all from distinguished experts and leading scholars and scientists, all of whom are committed evangelical Christians. They give scientific arguments on the origins of the universe, philosophical arguments in support of the goodness, transcendence and eternity of a designer, and historical arguments for the person and work of Jesus of Nazareth. Further articles dealing with evil, suffering and whether or not Jesus is the only way to God also appear in this volume.
Even with 50 full articles, this is not a comprehensive defense of the Christian faith, but rather a “springboard into the exciting and fruitful field of Christian apologetics." Most importantly, it will provide Christian students in American and Canadian universities with material for their own defense of the faith right in the eye of the storm.
