Kudos, complaints and continuing change
Response to the new format of ChristianWeek in last month's editions was swift to arrive, and most of the early reviews are positive. "I really like and appreciate the new format as per the October 2011 issue!! The smaller compact size is great and the new format is enjoyable to read!! Great change!! Great look," wrote one.
Another wrote simply to say: "It's brilliant! Well done." While we don't normally traffic in double exclamation points, it's encouraging to receive that kind of enthusiasm from readers.
But it isn't completely satisfying to everyone. One of the compromises involved in moving to a more compact format is that we reduced the type size, a fact that's been noticed by a number of faithful readers - particularly seniors - who are finding it too tiny for their faltering eyes. "It is just too stressful to my eyes trying to decipher the small font," wrote one subscriber who's been with us since the paper's inception in 1987.
We appreciate (almost) all the feedback we receive and certainly take it seriously. ChristianWeek is always a work in progress. We will continue to make adjustments - including experimenting with a larger type size - as the next editions roll through the production process. In fact, we're working on it now.
Meanwhile, I also have another staff transition to report. Jerrad Peters is leaving his position as managing editor of ChristianWeek to pursue a full-time opportunity as a soccer writer. We will miss him very much. (In fact, we already do.) Jerrad's last day with us was Thursday, October 13.
ChristianWeek is very fortunate to have an experienced managing editor already working with us. As we continue to navigate this transition, Kelly Rempel has been re-arranging her duties to pick up many of the managing tasks, this alongside her maternal responsibilities. She will continue to work part time and mostly from her home.
At this stage we still don't know what gifted editorial person God will be sending to continue this work. That search is under way and we look forward to meeting our next staff person.
We are grateful to Jerrad for three-plus years of service and wish him true success as his career develops.
