MBCI looks to the future

WINNIPEG, MB—Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute is undergoing serious changes.

First, they are still looking for a new principal. A search committee made up of members of the school's board was accepting applications until March 15 and plans to have a replacement for outgoing principal Norbert Bargen in place for the start of the 2012/2013 school year.

During his 12 years as principal, Bargen saw enrollment grow from an average of 550 students to 600. He also helped the school develop its middle years programs, and introduced the position of a campus pastor in order to help focus on the spiritual component of MBCI's mission.

"I think people are feeling sad [about Bargen leaving] in the sense that he's been a wonderful leader and he's accomplished a lot," says Sherry Sukkau, the director of development at MBCI.

"People are feeling proud of where the school is at this point … and we're looking to build on that in the future with a new leader in place."

Meanwhile, MBCI is also in the process of completing renovations it began in December 2010. The renovations have included the construction of a new administration building as well as a large multi-purpose space for things like student gatherings, dance classes and exam periods.

Sukkau points out that MBCI is now fully accessible for people with physical disabilities, and it also has a main entrance that it didn't before.

"The addition has made a huge difference to the school," she says of the 10,000 square feet MBCI added.
