Micah Challenge encourages youth to speak up on issues of poverty

OTTAWA, ON—Micah Challenge is mobilizing young people to take their concerns about poverty to Parliament Hill. The Raise Your Voice Challenge, May 9 to 12, will include a series of workshops on political action as well as meetings with various members of parliament.

Micah Challenge is an international Christian campaign with a vision to hold governments accountable on the need to alleviate poverty. It works in partnership with the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.

"Our mandate is around equipping Christians to raise a prophetic voice on behalf of the poor," says Robyn Bright, national coordinator of Micah Challenge in Canada.

Seminar topics include engaging with the media and biblical models of advocacy. This is the first year for the event. Conservative, NDP and Liberal MPs will participate.

"We are looking specifically at how we equip and mobilize students so they can go back to their communities and bring students together, to advocate on behalf of the poor," says Bright.

"The Church has developed a fairly robust and nuanced sense of how to go about doing development work well, and has put a lot of money into it. But the Church has not been as effective or coordinated at doing the advocacy side as well.

"It's a matter of putting your mouth where your money is."
