New documentary explores why people love choral singing

WINNIPEG, MB—A new documentary chronicles southern Manitoba's choral scene, exploring why people love to sing together and the difference it makes in their lives.

Airing now on MTS Winnipeg on Demand, the 30-minute documentary As One Voice features interviews with, and performances by, the Bison Men's Chorus, Ecco Chamber Choir, Canzona, the University of Manitoba Singers, the Assiniboine Chorus, Renaissance Voices, Spirit's Call Choir and Linden Christian School.

"This documentary was a first that I have tackled on my own and was close to my heart as I grew up singing in choirs from an early age," explains director Craig Johnson, who attends Springs Church in Winnipeg.

"Being a part of several choirs here in Winnipeg over the years made me realize that we have something special here, and it was a story that needed to be told. Choral singing touches many people every day and is one of the most unifying experiences people can share."

Johnson worked on the documentary for most of 2011 and says one of the biggest highlights was meeting different choir directors and singers.

"People from all walks of life, from all sorts of professions, are involved at all kinds of different levels," he says. "People just love to [sing in choirs], and it's a really unifying thing. It's one of those things where you're literally on the same page—you're all headed toward a common goal, with a common end result."
