The Russian Federation's Security Council is recommending crackdowns on unfriendly religious groups which it says are using humanitarian excuses to negatively impact security.
The council, which includes President Vladimir Putin, made a statement this week recommending that the country "neutralize internal threats to national security." The statement is a concerning escalation in Russia's longstanding effort to marginalize and criminalize minority religious groups, including evangelical churches and other protestant denominations, which it often labels as extremists.
