The Growth of Christianity in the World’s First Atheist Country
Stories We're Following: From The Gospel Coalition
When the Communist leader of Albania declared it the first atheist state in 1967, Christianity was already the minority, with only a tiny pocket of evangelicals - an estimated 100 people - to be found in the whole country.
As the government worked to stamp out religion by imprisoning, torturing and killing church leaders, evangelism became dangerous, bibles hard to come by, and statistics nonexistent.
Several decades later, after the fall of Communism and the re-opening of the country, reports showed most Albanians returning to their pre-Communist religions, the majority to Islam. However, from the smallest of beginnings, evangelicals were the one group that had grown significantly. Today, it remains a small minority, but continues to grow rapidly despite continuing barriers to evangelism.
