Unwritten play looking for actors, storytellers

TORONTO, ON—A cross-Canada ecumenical theatre production examining the realities of spiritual life is looking for actors.

Youth leader Jenny Salisbury will direct the play entitled Roots Among the Rocks. Salisbury says they are looking for six young-adult actors who will go on a "scavenger hunt" to collect stories which will be woven into the piece.

"What we want to do is bring together a group of young artists who collect true stories of brokenness and triumph from priests, from laity and life-long church goers, and then to stir them together in a show worth seeing and to bring that across country."

Salisbury calls it "an adventure in story-telling. Story-telling is a sacred thing we do. It brings us together, it ignites our imaginations…and it is in telling our stories that we discover who we are."

The play will be launched at Anglican General Synod in Halifax in June. The production will spend July and August touring across Canada, with stops planned in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Saskatoon, before ending at the Canadian Lutheran Anglican Youth gathering in London this August.

The event is sponsored by the Ask & Imagine Anglican and Lutheran youth leadership program from the Huron University College in London, Ontario. It has also received funding from General Synod and private sponsors.

Roots Among the Rocks artists will receive a salary along with room, board and travel costs. Actors have until the end of February to submit an audition package.
